Características morfológicas de las vértebras cervicales y trastornos funcionales asociados a cambios degenerativos por artrosis.

Resumen.

La región cervical consta de siete vértebras, sus articulaciones intervienen en los movimientos del cuello y la cabeza; sus trastornos funcionales son frecuentes. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica con el objetivo de describir algunos aspectos de la filogenia, ontogenia e identificar las características anatómicas normales y los cambios degenerativos que ocurren por artrosis y su relación con la sintomatología. Se concluyó que las principales características regionales de las vértebras cervicales son: presencia del agujero transverso, proceso espinoso bifurcado, cuerpo pequeño y agujero vertebral amplio. Las transformaciones morfológicas por artrosis provocan degeneración del cartílago articular y neoformación ósea en los rebordes articulares, afectan los discos intervertebrales y las vértebras, creando osteofitos que estrechan el espacio correspondiente a la médula espinal y los nervios, que pueden sufrir compresión, inflamación y provocar dolor en los miembros superiores y el cuello. Otros trastornos funcionales son vértigos, ruidos en el oído, cefalea y síndrome de insuficiencia vertebro basilar.
